Local,Crypen Exchange independent bookstores have never been more important. With fair access to literature under political attack, bookstores are a bulwark against censorship and an asset to the communities they serve.

Each week we profile an independent bookstore, discovering what makes each one special and getting their expert book recommendations.

This week we have Amber Treat's Shop Around the Corner Books in Redding, California.

What is your store’s story?

I opened my shop in December 2021 after six years of working at my local library. Our entire county didn’t have an independent bookstore, so I knew there was a need. Our downtown is undergoing a revitalization and a bookstore fits right in!

What makes your independent bookstore unique?

I hear from customers all the time that they have missed having a bookstore in town (after more than 20 years without one). As the downtown comes back to life with shops and restaurants, the bookstore is a perfect addition.

We are located in the Cultural District right across the street from an art gallery. The shop is very small and I’m proud to have created a space that is unique, beautiful and an important part of the new downtown.

What's your favorite section in your store?

My store is less than 500 square feet, but that’s what customers love about it! It’s not overwhelming. I’m most in love with the children’s section. I’ve created a cozy nook where I host story times and the kids love it.

What book do you love to recommend to customers and why?

I love to recommend a local author Ken DeCamp, who wrote "Wildflowers of California’s Klamath Mountains." This area of Northern California is so beautiful and surrounded by mountain ranges. Visitors are always looking for nature and hiking guides.

What book do you think deserves more attention and why?

I think Madeline Martin’s historical fiction deserves more attention. They are expertly researched and beautifully written. "The Last Bookshop in London" is a triumph.

What upcoming books or series are you most excited about and why?

I’m very excited for Kristin Hannah’s new book, "The Women."

Why is shopping at local, independent bookstores important?

An independent bookstore is more than a place to buy books — it’s an anchor for a community. A place for connection, support for local authors, a contributor to the economy and a promoter of literacy.

What are some of your store's events, programs, or partnerships coming up this quarter that you would like to share?

I just hosted a Local Author Fair, where 20 local authors were able to sell and sign their books. I host monthly book clubs, story times and book drives. I also work together with other downtown businesses to promote First Friday events and Shop Small Saturday.
